BENGT MEETS KITTY JOSEPH

Since graduating from a MA Textile Design at the Royal College of Art in 2011, she already has an impressive CV. From collaborating with Zandra Rhodes and Piers Atkinson as well as having Lady Gaga, MAC Cosmetics and Carine Roitfeld seemingly loving her creations as much as us. We met her for an interview a few days ago and we hope to give you an insight into the playful, dreamy and inspiring world of Kitty Joseph- which is very telling in her autumn/winter ’12 collection that just launched here at BENGT.

TELL US YOUR INSPIRATION FOR YOUR A/W ’12 COLLECTION

It all came about once I moved into my new studio (the science department of an old school in Battersea, London). I felt inspired by my surroundings. When I found an old box of rocks it felt natural to draw inspiration from them. It made me want to focus on tone, patterns and textures rather than a particular colour palette. The glitter was a play on the representing the natural chaotic form of the rocks and an element of childhood nostalgia is attached as well, after finding an old glitter stick-which I could watch for days!

DESCRIBE THE KITTY JOSEPH ‘WOMAN’

I think that the heart of my designs is in the print- not the woman wearing it. I’d hope that the print and the story can find an audience in every woman.

TELL US YOUR CAREER HIGHLIGHTS AND WHERE YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 5 YEARS

It’s all happened so quickly! I’d definitely say that being able to work with such influential people like Zandra Rhodes and Piers Atkinson have been great highlights. As well as being recognised by Lady Gaga and others of course is an honour.

In 5 years I’d simply like to be doing what I’m already doing- watching my business grow and still be very much involved in textiles and colour.

WHERE DO YOU GO TO HANG OUT OR RELAX?

I have the best of both worlds- where I live and work are both really chilled out, peaceful areas but I can easily go East London and have a great time and dance. At night I really love to walk along the river and do some drawing.

WHAT IS YOUR BEST PIECE OF ADVICE?

It was advice given to me from Zandra Rhodes- Don’t give up and keep going! I think it’s important to surround yourself with positive people and good friends.

ONE THING YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT

Coffee!

FINALLY, BIGGEST FASHION FAUX PAS WOULD HAVE TO BE…

Biggest faux pas would be worrying to have one. Fashion is meant to be fun!

We managed to get some snaps of Kitty Joseph and her studio bits and bobs as well as showcasing her beautifully directed film by Rohan Wadham.
